Something as deceptively simple as recording your transcripts can feel like a complicated ordeal with AMCAS. How should you present the Course Number? What about the Course Name? Then there's the AO versus BCPM GPA calculation. Can that course in Ethnobotany be counted into BCPM, or is that a stretch? How much detail should you go into in the Activities section?
The following steps can transport you from a state of hair-yanking misery to calm, collected, and in-the-know:
1. First, if you haven't already, download the AMCAS 2007 Instruction Book on the American Association of Medical Colleges Website. Revel in the straightforward description of how each section should be completed. You may find the course listings section particularly useful for calculating your BCPM/AO GPA. The sections on presenting incomplete and in progress work are also very useful.
2. If the instruction book doesn't answer your questions, go directly to the source. Unlike the usual 30 minute fury-inducing wait that can ensue when one calls an organization, the AMCAS people usually keep you on hold for no more than 5 minutes, and are incredibly helpful and efficient at answering your question. Call (202) 828-0600.
3. The ASK the Counselor archive contains a repository of questions and answers about many application-related topics, such as the infamous chemistry sequence at Cal, community college coursework, and AP credit. A search by keyword will unveil dozens of responses. If you don't find what you're looking for in the archives, then submit your own question and receive at response in 2-3 working days.
4. Visit our Infolab at 2111 Bancroft Way and take a peek at the "Sample AMCAS" binder, where you will find actual examples of student applications.
5. Make an appointment with a pre-med advisor. If you have explored these other resources and still can't find an answer to your application question, a pre-med advisor can provide some further insight. Call 642-1716 extension 6, or make a 15 or 45 minute appointment online.
